What are Smoke Control Dampers
Smoke dampers are vents used within smoke shaft systems to vent smoke from corridors, lobbies, and internal spaces.
Installed at each level of a building, they open automatically during a fire to allow smoke into the vertical shaft, helping keep escape routes clear.
When closed, the damper’s fire-rated blades create a fire-resisting barrier (typically up to 120 minutes), helping contain fire and smoke.
Working on a smoke shaft project? We can help specify the correct dampers and compatible smoke ventilation components.
Smoke Control Damper Options
We supply a range of smoke control dampers suitable for both standard and bespoke applications.
- Available in standard and custom sizes
- Tested and certified to relevant standards
- Suitable for integration into smoke shaft and multi-zone systems
- Available with a range of finishes and decorative grille options
If you’re working on a project, we can help ensure the correct damper is specified as a part of a compliant system.
How Smoke Control Dampers Work
A Smoke control damper is connected to a central control system and operate automatically in the event of a fire.
- A smoke detector or fire alarm activates the system
- The damper on the fire floor opens to exhaust smoke into the shaft
- Dampers on all other levels remain closed to resist fire and smoke
- Smoke travels up the shaft and is released at roof level via an AOV
This ensures smoke is removed from the affected floor while maintaining compartmentation throughout the building.
Dedicated Smoke Ventilation Experts
Every project is supported by a dedicated smoke ventilation expert who’ll review your drawings and fire strategy, recommend the right solution, and provide technical support from specification through to completion.
How to Order Your System
Key considerations for Smoke Control Dampers
How Smoke Control Dampers fit into a Smoke Vent System
Smoke control dampers form part of a wider smoke ventilation system, working alongside smoke shafts, AOVs, and control systems.
Where corridors lead into a stairwell, both areas require separate ventilation. Corridors are ventilated using smoke shafts and dampers, while stairwells are ventilated independently using an AOV at the head of the stairwell.
In multi-zone systems, each corridor on each floor is treated as a separate zone. When a fire is detected only the damper on the affected floor opens, while all others remain closed, helping to contain smoke and maintain clear escape routes.
Compliance and Standards
Smoke control dampers must meet relevant fire safety and smoke control standards.
Key standards include:
- BS EN 12101-8
- EN 1366-2
- EN 1366-10
- Approved Document B
- BS 9999 and BS 9991
