How Multi-zone Systems Work
Multi-zone smoke ventilation systems are designed to control how smoke moves through a building, rather than opening all vents at once.
When smoke is detected, the system identifies the affected zone and activates AOVs in that area only. This allows smoke and heat to be removed from the source of the fire, reducing the risk of it spreading to other parts of the building.
At the same time, other zones can be held closed (locked out), preventing ventilation from drawing smoke into adjacent areas or across different floors.
What’s Included in a Multi-Zone System
Every multi-zone smoke ventilation system is designed around the building and fire strategy, so the components required will vary from project to project.
A typical system may include:
- Smoke control panel
- AOV windows, smoke vent louvres and Roof AOVs
- Smoke control dampers
- Smoke detectors
- Manual override controls
- Power supplies and battery backup
Systems can be designed using either natural or mechanical smoke ventilation. Higher-rise buildings (typically over 30 metres) will require a mechanical system.
